Delhi Pushes Back on US Tariffs and Energy Demands
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reaffirmed India’s commitment to economic self-reliance and energy sovereignty, rejecting mounting pressure from former US President Donald Trump to halt Russian oil imports. Speaking at a rally in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, 3 August, Modi backed the 'Make in India' movement in light of new US trade threats.
Trump’s Tough Talk Meets Indian Resolve
Trump has criticised India for purchasing Russian oil, maintaining high tariffs on US goods, and “manipulating” immigration policy. Trump also mocked India's role in BRICS, saying, “They can take their dead economies down together.”
Despite this rhetoric, India is holding its ground. PM Modi stressed that the country’s priority is the welfare of its farmers, small industries, and youth employment amid a volatile global economic climate.
PM champions economic sovereignty amid rising global tensions
The Ministry of External Affairs echoed this sentiment, describing the India–Russia relationship as “steady and time-tested.” Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “Our bilateral relationships are independent and evaluated on their own merit.”
With the global geopolitical landscape in flux, Modi’s speech signals India’s intent to maintain a balanced, sovereign foreign policy — even in the face of pressure from global superpowers.
