BEIJING: The popular dance number 'Jimmy Jimmy' enacted by Mithun Chakraborty is now being used as the slogan of protests against lockdowns in China after small changes.
The superhit dance number from the Disco Dancer movie has been a popular theme of partygoers in India for quite a few years now. The famous disco music was created by Bappi Lahiri for the 1982 film.
The chorus of the original number was 'Jimmy jimmy aaja aaja' which sounds similar to 'Jie mi'. And 'Jie mi' in the Mandarin language translates to 'give me rice'. This has become a popular slogan in the protests against restrictions in the country due to new infections of Covid.
The song changed meaning when changed from Hindi to Mandarin. The original song spoke about the life of a dance lover coming from humble backgrounds. The new transliterated meaning is however far from this. The popular Mandarin version means "Give me some rice? Who can give me? I ran out of it. No need to give much rice, my family has only a few members."
Under the funny tone of the song, the citizens seem to plea the government to lift the harsh measures. With the resurgence of the virus in certain parts of the country, China has gone on a full-scale lockdown measure when even a handful of people are infected. And this is attracting dissatisfaction from the Chinese citizens as a whole.
Several versions of the song have now gone viral across different social media. But the popularity on Douyin, China's popular video sharing application, has become phenomenal. People are seen dancing to the popular number with empty vessels in hand. Some of them are even seen wearing their own versions of 'Sari' while swaying to the peppy beats.
Since the government maintains a strict vigil on the content shared across social media, direct protests are always out of the question. So people resort to unique and innovative ways to express their discomfort.
As the rest of the countries have decided to let go of the covid related restrictions, China refuses to lift the measures. The zero covid strategy means a complete lockdown and mass testing even when a single person is tested positive.
