MUMBAI: In a landmark event to commemorate International Women’s Day, Central Railways has made history by operating the Vande Bharat Express with an all-women crew for the first time.

Train No. 22223, which travels from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai to Sainagar Shirdi, was entirely managed by women, including the loco pilot, assistant loco pilot, train manager, ticket examiners, and onboard hostesses.

This campaign is one of Indian Railways' larger initiatives towards gender inclusiveness and appreciating the noble work of women in the Indian Railways. Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Central Railways, Swapnil Nila, underscored the significance of this campaign, saying, "Indian Railways has always worked towards empowering women." On International Women’s Day, the CSMT-Shirdi Vande Bharat Express is being operated by an all-women crew, and we plan to extend this initiative to other Vande Bharat trains.”

Central Railways celebrated this milestone on social media, describing it as a proud moment for Indian Railways and a testament to women’s strength and leadership.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also celebrated the moment by paying tribute to women achievements in different sectors. He declared that his social media handles would be taken over by women achievers for a day, where they would be able to post their motivating stories. This move by Indian Railways is a progressive step toward increasing gender diversity in the transport sector, providing more opportunities for women in crucial positions.
