NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has resigned and submitted her resignation to Lt Governor VK Saxena on Sunday, following the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) poor performance in the assembly elections, the results of which were announced on February 8.
Atishi was one of the few AAP leaders to win, retaining her Kalkaji seat by defeating BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri with a margin of 3,521 votes. Meanwhile, several prominent AAP leaders, including former CM Arvind Kejriwal, former deputy CM Manish Sisodia, and minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, suffered heavy losses. The BJP won 48 seats, while AAP secured only 22.
AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal faced a major defeat in his stronghold of New Delhi, where BJP’s Parvesh Verma won by a margin of 3,182 votes. This loss is a significant setback for Kejriwal, who has been a dominant figure in Delhi politics for the past decade.
The situation worsened for AAP as former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also lost in the Jangpura constituency, trailing by 572 votes after nine rounds of counting. Sisodia accepted the result gracefully and congratulated the winning BJP candidate. He expressed hope that the new representative would work for the welfare of the Jangpura people.
The election marked a major comeback for the BJP, which had not been in power in Delhi since 1998. The Congress party also faced a tough blow, suffering its third consecutive defeat in the national capital.
