Goa CM Manohar Parrikar's last rites to be performed today at Panaji

Guwahati: Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar's mortal remains arrived at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarter in Panaji where people will pay their last tributes.

Parrikar's last tributes will be performed at SAG grounds in Campal approximately 4km from Panaji at around 5 pm today.

Temporary fences have been erected at Kala Academy, Panaji to let visitors enter the premises systematically and citizens have queued outside the institute to pay homage to the Chief Minister.

Goans have also gathered in large numbers outside the BJP headquarters to pay respect to the Goa CM for the last time.

Parrikar's mortal remains have been wrapped in tricolour and left from his private residence in Dona Paula. Parrikar will be accorded state funeral with full military honours at Miramar Beach.

The High Court of Bombay at Goa and district courts in the state will remain closed today in lieu of Parrikar's death and the state has also declared a day-long holiday today and a seven day mourning period starting from March 18-24.

Parrikar took his last breath on March 17 at his residence due to his ill health. The CM was battling with cancer for more than a year and died at the age of 63

Following the death of Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, the Centre has announced a national mourning today and declared the National Flag will fly at half-mast across the country.

President of India, Ram Nath Kovind tweeted on Parrikar's demise, "Extremely sorry to hear the demise of Manohar Parrikar after an illness borne with fortitude and dignity. An epitome of integrity and dedication in public life, his service to the people of Goa and of India will not be forgotten."
