NEW DELHI: As part of its efforts to make India a global hub for collaborations in academic and technological research, the Ministry of Home Affairs launched the G20 Talent Visa.

The new visa category is tailored to bring to India researchers, scholars, and professionals from G20 countries, strengthening India's commitment to developing a robust scientific and educational framework.

The initiative is a follow up on the proposal by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G20 Summit of September, where he underlined the need to provide opportunity for top talent in science and technology to contribute to global advancement.

"A G20 Talent Visa could be a game-changer, enabling exceptional talent to explore opportunities worldwide," PM Modi stated while addressing the summit.

The G20 Talent Visa is an S-5 subcategory under the student visa framework of India, aimed at attracting international talent for post-doctoral research, academic projects, fellowships, and specialized training programs. This will boost innovation and build strong key sectors through international cooperation.

The University Grants Commission has been called upon to promote the visa among Indian universities. There should be dissemination of visa contents to researchers, faculties, and other stakeholders inside the universities and research centers, to reach as many persons as possible.

The G20 Talent Visa is the result of following global programs, such as the UK's Global Talent Visa, Australia's Global Talent Visa, and the US O-1 Visa, showing India's commitment to facilitating cross-border academic exchange. The visa will be given to those who specialize in science, technology, engineering, and other fields in academics and would work on the research and technological collaborations to accelerate the process of progress.

This initiative lends support to the vision for India as a global knowledge hub and promotes development in core sectors with talent exchange across borders.
