NEW DELHI: The parliamentary proceedings of the Lok Sabha were stalled for the fifth day in a row on Monday due to two adjournments brought on by opposition members' interruptions over a number of controversial matters.
There was a commotion when opposition members stormed the Well to demand talks on the recent violence in Sambhal, the suspected corruption involving the Adani Group, and other urgent issues when the House met at 11 AM following the weekend break. In the middle of the confusion, Speaker Om Birla promptly adjourned the meeting.
When the House met again at noon, Presiding Officer Sandhya Ray took over, but the impasse persisted. The Opposition continued to shout slogans in spite of repeated calls for order. Despite the fact that no notices for discussion had been accepted, the presiding officer went on and completed the necessary procedures, such as tabling various papers and reports.
“Hon’ble members, I urge you all to allow the House to function. Many members wish to address critical issues concerning their constituencies. The nation is watching, particularly first-time representatives who are eager to participate,” Ray appealed.
The members who were objecting, however, were immovable and persisted in interfering with the meeting. The House was forced to adjourn for the day because the presiding officer was unable to bring the house back into order.
With crucial legislative activity blocked, the ongoing disturbances show a growing divide between the opposition and the ruling party.
