NEW DELHI: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has announced a 20 percent reduction in the prices of books for classes 9 to 12. NCERT Director Dinesh Prasad Saklani revealed the decision at an event in the national capital on Monday. The price cut will be implemented starting from the upcoming academic year.
According to reports, the minister stated that while textbooks for classes 9-12 will be sold at a 20 percent lower price, textbooks for classes 1-8 will remain priced at Rs. 65 per copy. The revised prices for classes 9-12 will be applicable starting from the 2026-27 academic year.
The minister said, "This year, NCERT has brought in a lot of efficiency in paper procurement and also onboarded printers with the latest printing machines. NCERT has decided to pass on this benefit to the students of the country."
The director was speaking at the Bhumi Pujan ceremony for the construction of an auditorium at the NCERT Headquarters.
In this regard, NCERT has signed an MoU with Flipkart and Amazon, where the books will now be available at lower rates, even in villages.
Every year, the NCERT prints approximately 4-5 crore textbooks across 300 titles. For the next academic year, the council plans to print around 15 crore books, a significant increase from the earlier decision to print only 5 crore books.
The director added that this is the first time the price of textbooks has been significantly reduced.
