DEHRADUN: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 38th National Games in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, marking the Silver Jubilee year of the state’s formation.
The event, which is being held across 11 cities in 8 districts of Uttarakhand, will run from January 28 to February 14, 2025. Addressing the audience, Prime Minister Modi expressed his excitement over the energy of the youth in the state, highlighting the National Games as a platform to showcase the nation's athletic talent.
The Prime Minister praised Uttarakhand for its fast growth and wished the athletes well, saying the games were starting with blessings from Baba Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Maa Ganga. He highlighted that this year’s National Games show the spirit of "One India, Best India" and emphasized the inclusion of local games and environmentally friendly practices, such as using e-waste to make the trophies and medals.
Looking at how sports in India are growing, Modi praised the country’s recent wins in global events like the Olympics and the World Chess Championship. He said sports are now considered serious career options for young people, not just hobbies. He also mentioned that India’s effort to host the 2036 Olympics will raise the country’s sports achievements and help sectors like construction, tourism, and transport.
The Prime Minister mentioned Uttarakhand’s significant achievements, like being the first state in India to introduce the Uniform Civil Code, which he linked to the unity and teamwork in sports. He also emphasized the need for better fitness, urging people to exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet to help fight the growing obesity problem.
As part of the sustainability focus of the National Games, a "Sports Forest" will be created near the venue, with over 10,000 trees to be planted by athletes and guests. The games will have 35 sports, with medals given for 33 of them. This year, Yoga and Mallakhamb will be included for the first time.
Over 10,000 athletes from 36 states and one union territory are participating in the 38th National Games at different venues across the state. The Prime Minister wrapped up his speech by encouraging all athletes to do their best, help make the event a success, and promote unity and excellence through sports.
The Governor of Uttarakhand, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Gurmit Singh, and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami were also present at the event, along with several dignitaries.
