NEW DELHI: Rekha Gupta has been sworned-in as the Chief Minister of Delhi on Thursday during a grand ceremony held at Ramlila Maidan, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several top BJP leaders, including other National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Chief Ministers. This marks the return of the BJP to power in Delhi after 26 years.

Gupta becomes the fourth woman to hold the position of Chief Minister in Delhi, following Sheila Dikshit, Sushma Swaraj, and Atishi. She is also the fourth BJP leader to take on the role, after Madan Lal Khurana, Sahib Singh Verma, and Sushma Swaraj. Along with Gupta, the newly elected Council of Ministers took their oaths during the ceremony.

Gupta's victory in the Shalimar Bagh seat, where she defeated Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Bandana Kumari by over 29,000 votes, played a significant role in her appointment.

The six newly elected BJP MLAs include Parvesh Verma, who notably defeated AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal from the New Delhi seat, alongside Ashish Sood, Pankaj Singh, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Kapil Mishra, and Ravinder Indraj.

In a meeting of the BJP legislature party, Rekha Gupta was elected as the Leader of the House for the newly formed 8th Delhi Assembly. She was invited by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to form the government.

The new Council of Ministers is expected to hold its first meeting soon and implement key schemes like Mahila Samriddhi Yojna and Ayushman Bharat health insurance. The BJP's victory ended AAP's decade-long rule in the Delhi Assembly elections held on February 5, where the BJP won 48 out of 70 seats.
