DEHRADUN : A massive torchlight protest was initiated by hundreds of people in Uttarakhand's Joshimath area. The prime motive behind this protest was to demonstrate the ongoing disaster, and highlight cracks that are expanding in approximately 561 houses.

The cracks are being developed due to continuous land subsidence in the region. On Wednesday, several people came out in the streets of the area and led a protest with flaming torches.

Shailendra Panwar, the Joshimath Municipal Chairman stated that, more than 3000 people have witnessed damaged in their houses, all the houses have been surveyed by the department. Apart from houses, roads are also developing cracks making it difficult for the pedestrian to travel.

The matter has been discussed with CM Pushkar Singh, as stated by Panwar. The houses in marwari ward are getting cracks as a result of water seepage. However, the CM asserted that, the issue will be resolved as soon as possible.

He will visit the town in the coming days and initiate measures to handle the worrying scenario. Until then, the chairman of Municipal Corporation has been asked to take care of the situation.

According to the report, a total of nine wards are affected by the landslides, the cracks are increasing each passing day.

The ex municipal President of Joshimath stated that, she is living in a damaged house and is worried about the condition of the town in the future, if the matter is not taken care of immediately. The danger of house collapsing in this chilled winter season is currently a major issue faced by the residents of the area.
