The plan is to make it mandatory for the name of the caller to be displayed on the screen which will enable recipients to identify callers and prevent spam and scam calls.

NEW DELHI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has directed telecom operators, including Jio, Airtel, and Vi, to roll out the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) feature, which will display the caller's registered name on the recipient's phone without needing third-party apps like Truecaller.

The move aims to curb spam and fraudulent calls by verifying caller identities. While the exact rollout date is yet to be announced, TRAI has urged the government to expedite implementation.

Vodafone Idea Ltd, Bharti Airtel Ltd, and Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd are collaborating with global companies such as HP, Dell, Ericsson, and Nokia to develop the servers and software required to roll out this feature.

As per reports, the necessary equipment required to implement trials of Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) have been ordered. Trials have already been conducted in select circles, and the service will be introduced in stages once the technology stabilises.

Earlier in February 2024, the implementation of CNAP for all smartphones was recommended by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) who urged the government to mandate telecom operators to roll out this service.

This move aims to curb the harassment faced by customers from unknown or spam callers.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), in January 2025, directed telecom operators to implement the CNAP service on mobile phones as soon as possible.

The plan is to make it mandatory for the name of the caller to be displayed on the screen which will enable recipients to identify callers and prevent spam and scam calls.
