THANE: A mobile phone was found in the possession of an undertrial inmate at Thane Central Jail in Maharashtra. It was discovered that the inmate concealed it in his shoes. On December 30, 2024, during a routine inspection, the jail officials caught the culprit. The criminal was apprehended during a regular examination of barrack number three by a jail sepoy. This barrack held about 200 inmates.

The sepoy found a mobile phone, with a broken screen, hidden inside the sandal on closer inspection. Markings on the phone showed that it belonged to Sethia. A case was filed against Sethia for bringing a forbidden gadget into the jail, and the phone was confiscated.

Sethia has been imprisoned at Thane Central Jail since September 30, 2023, after being arrested in connection with a criminal case filed by Kashimira police.

The discovery of the mobile phone has brought to light the lapses in security protocols at the jail, as authorities are conducting an investigation into how the mobile phone was smuggled into the prison. The investigation also attempts to determine whether any accomplices assisted the prisoner in obtaining the device, which makes it necessary to review the jail security measures and possible vulnerabilities of the facility.
