African Swine Fever case detected in Arunachal district

A confirmed case of African Swine Fever (ASF) has been reported from Luaksim village in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district on Wednesday.

Itanagar: A confirmed case of African Swine Fever (ASF) has been reported from Luaksim village in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district on Wednesday.

The case was detected after a blood sample for laboratory diagnosis at the National Research Centre on Pig, Rani, Assam returned positive, Kanubari Mobile Veterinary Unit veterinary officer Dr Ganno Tayeng said.

The veterinary department in Longding has issued a public advisory to contain and control the spread of ASF.

In accordance with the standard operating procedures of the government, district veterinary officer (DVO), Longding, Dr Ojuli Moyong has declared a radius of 1-km around Luaksim village and infected zone.

He said a radius of 10-km beyond the infected zone has been declared as a surveillance zone.

The department has also banned the movement of pigs and piglets in and out of the infected and surveillance zones and has also banned sale and slaughter of pigs within the notified areas until further notice.

It further banned the transportation of pork or pig products from the affected areas and has declared the closure of all local pig markets, including temporary or weekly markets, within the notified areas.

Dr Moyong has urged farmers and the general public to isolate all pigs showing symptoms of high fever, weakness, loss of appetite, and sudden death, and immediately report suspected cases or unusual pig deaths to the nearest veterinary officer of DVO office.

Advising farmers not to dispose of dead pigs in open areas or water bodies, he asked them to adopt proper disposal methods through burial with lime spread or incineration or as guided by veterinary staff.
