Itanagar: A major step was taken under the livestock insurance scheme in Papum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh, as 19 mithuns and one cow were insured for a period of three years at Upper Jumi, at Kimin in the district. The initiative is aimed at providing financial protection to livestock owners against unexpected losses due to death or disease outbreaks, strengthening rural livelihoods and animal husbandry resilience.
As per the scheme's provisions, livestock owners contribute only 5.5% of the total sum insured. The remaining premium is subsidized by the government, with 75% covered by the central government under the National Livestock Mission and an additional 10% paid by the state government. The insurance process was supervised by district veterinary officer Dr Takio Taram Tarh. It was executed by veterinary officers Dr Tumge Ete from Balijan, and Dr Yapu Nijo of Kimin, with the active support of field staff and in the presence of mithun owners.
