ITANAGAR: A two-day training programme on “Production Technology of Dragon Fruit” concluded successfully at the College of Agriculture, Pasighat, in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday, equipping 30 farmers with practical and scientific knowledge on cultivating the high-value crop. The initiative, funded by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and implemented by the Multi Technology Testing Centre and Vocational Training Centre (MTTC & VTC) of Central Agricultural University, aimed to promote crop diversification and boost farmers’ income through dragon fruit farming.
East Siang deputy commissioner Sonalika Jiwani, in her address, urged farmers to move beyond traditional crops like paddy and adopt high-value crops such as dragon fruit.
Emphasizing the benefits of organic farming, she encouraged them to pursue organic certification for better market returns. She also expressed appreciation to NABARD for funding and the College of Agriculture for implementing the training.
NABARD assistant general manager (AGM) Nitya Mili highlighted various schemes available under the bank and urged the farmers to adopt scientific cultivation practices to ensure sustainable outcomes.
He also spoke about the National Cooperation Policy 2025 and encouraged farmers to join cooperative movements like MLAMPS.
SBI lead district manager Putul Basumatary, assured the participants of full cooperation from banks in availing credit facilities and explained the process of obtaining agricultural loans through line departments.
Dean of the College of Agriculture, Dr Sanjay Swami emphasised the nutritional value and increasing market demand of dragon fruit.
A technical bulletin on dragon fruit was released during the event. As a major takeaway, 4,200 rooted dragon fruit cuttings were distributed among the 30 participating farmers, equipping them to begin their cultivation journey with confidence and newly acquired knowledge.
