ITANAGAR: Police arrested one more individual in connection with the overhead water tank burst incident at St Alphonsa Public School in Naharlagun, near here, on December 14 last which claimed the lives of three students.
A senior police officer informed that the alleged accused, Kurian Pallikunnel John (64), a resident of Putthupally village at Kottayam in Kerala, involved in the supervision of the construction of the water tank at the school, was arrested from Guwahati, on Friday.
As per the statements of witnesses and co-accused Shaji Cherian, Principal of the school, the arrested accused Kurian Pallikunnel John, who was working as the hostel supervisor, was also responsible for supervising the construction of the water tank.
He had absconded immediately after the incident and frequently changed his location to evade arrest, Naharlagun SDPO Rishi Longdo informed.
The officer-in-charge of Naharlagun Police Station Inspector Krishnendu Dev, along with constable D Borah tracked the accused movements across multiple locations, including Kerala, Kozhikode, Bengaluru and Guwahati.
After an extensive four-day inter-state operation, he was arrested near Guwahati Airport on Friday night under a non-bailable warrant of arrest issued by the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) here, the SDPO added.
Three students of the school were killed and two others injured when an overhead water tank collapsed and fell on December 14 last.
The students were playing at the school premises in Model Village, when the tank collapsed at around 9 AM. The police have detained the school principal, owner, and four wardens.
