ITANAGAR: In a groundbreaking step for the state's animal husbandry sector, Arunachal Pradesh has successfully carried out its first-ever artificial insemination (AI) using imported sex-sorted Holstein Friesian semen. The historic achievement took place on Friday, marking a significant leap in enhancing the state's dairy development efforts, officials informed.
The AI was performed as part of a broader initiative following the guidance of union MoS for Animal Husbandry and Dairying S P Singh Baghel, they said.
The successful procedure was carried out by the state's dairy development department at the Central Cattle Breeding Farm in Nirjuli, near here, where the first cow underwent insemination using the imported semen.
The semen, sourced from internationally recognised dairy lines, promises to enhance the quality of local livestock, particularly through improved milk production and better breed standards.
In a further demonstration of commitment to advancing this technological innovation, the department performed another round of AI on Saturday, utilising sex-sorted semen recently procured from Sabarmati Ashram Gaushala (SAG).
The second insemination targeted a third lactation Holstein Friesian cow, showcasing the department's ongoing efforts to scale up genetic improvements across the state's dairy herds, the officials said.
The introduction of sex-sorted semen technology is poised to revolutionize breeding practices in Arunachal Pradesh. By ensuring the birth of more female calves, the technique holds the promise of significantly increasing the milk-producing population, thereby contributing to enhanced dairy productivity and supporting the livelihood of farmers.
With the successful completion of the initial AIs, the northeastern state has taken a crucial step toward modernizing its animal husbandry sector. The advancement also aligns with the state's vision of improving dairy infrastructure and supporting the livelihood of its farming community.
The historical achievement stands as a testament to the hard work of the officials and their commitment to progress, state Agriculture, Horticulture, and Dairy Development minister G D Wangsu said in a social media post. Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, as well as national representatives, have expressed their pride in the state's growing role in adopting cutting-edge agricultural technologies.
The success not only underscores the state's growing capabilities in animal husbandry but also places Arunachal Pradesh on the map as a forward-thinking leader in dairy development.
The use of sex-sorted semen technology is expected to be a game-changer for the state's dairy sector, creating new opportunities for farmers and improving milk production, ultimately boosting the state's agricultural economy, Wangsu said.
"Congratulations to everyone involved in this remarkable achievement, marking a new era for Arunachal Pradesh's animal husbandry and dairy industry," the minister said in another social media post.
