TAWANG: Tawang district has experienced an increase in vehicle accidents over the past two days which was caused by heavy snowfall and the presence of black ice on the roads.
Several vehicles have reportedly skidded off the road or overturned near the Sela Tunnel and Power Camp above Jang. This stretch is regarded as the most accident-prone area during snowfall.
Tawang Deputy Commissioner Kangki Darang reported that the stretch from Sela Pass to Jaswant Garh has seen the majority of accidents. “These areas do not get sunlight and the ice gets stuck to the road and becomes slippery. We have issued an advisory to all vehicles to use chains on their tyres,” he said.
The district administration has urged commuters and tourists to exercise heightened caution while travelling on the Tawang road, particularly in areas with heavy snowfall, to ensure safety and prevent accidents.
Meanwhile, earlier last month, with extreme weather challenges during winter, Tawang District Commissioner (DC) Kanki Darang issued an advisory to ensure public safety. The guidelines are on precautionary measures for tourists and residents, especially in high-altitude areas prone to harsh conditions.
Travelers heading to famous places, such as Bumla Pass, Shongetser Lake, PT Tso, and Sela Pass, are advised to check weather and road reports before heading out. Sharp and extreme variations in the weather conditions, coupled with heavy snowfall, icy roads, and deep drifts, can easily endanger the safety of a traveler.
Traveling when such extreme weather conditions exist can lead to accidents. Non-skid chains on tires should be provided for each vehicle for smooth travel along the snow-covered roads.
