Arunachal: Tirap District Hosts Vibrant Pre-Nyokum Festival Honoring Nyishi Heritage

Nyishi employees celebrated the Pre-Nyokum Festival in Khonsa with the theme "Honoring Our Heritage & Fostering Unity Among Tribes." The event was attended by dignitaries, including DC Techu Aran.

ITANAGAR: The Nyishi employees in Tirap district celebrated the Pre-Nyokum Festival with enthusiasm and traditional spirit in Khonsa on Friday.

The event, themed "Honoring Our Heritage & Fostering Unity Among Tribes," was attended by several dignitaries, including Tirap Deputy Commissioner Techu Aran.

Aran extended his greetings to the Nyishi community and reflected on his time in Seppa, praising the Nyishi people for their warmth, hospitality, and commitment to preserving their cultural heritage.

He emphasized the importance of passing on traditions to the younger generation, urging them to continue learning and practicing their customs. He also highlighted the Nyishi community’s positive attitude and strong opposition to negativity.

Tirap ZPC Chathong Lowang, another special guest, described Nyokum as one of the most important festivals of Arunachal Pradesh and commended the organizing committee for showcasing the vibrant Nyishi culture in Khonsa.

The event also included speeches from various dignitaries, including Er. Bharat Sonam, Executive Engineer (PHE&WS), who thanked the guests and community leaders for making the event successful.

Tana Bapu, ADC Khonsa and Organizing Chairman, explained the mythology behind Nyokum, highlighting its significance as a festival that invokes spiritual forces for harmony, prosperity, and well-being.

The festival’s rituals, which include the sacrifice of animals, are deeply rooted in the community’s traditions and do not involve idols.

The day concluded with a community feast and included cultural performances, traditional dances, and a celebration of the Nyishi community’s rich cultural heritage. The event was attended by several officials and community leaders.
