ITANAGAR: Mesom Singhi, an ace karate player from Arunachal Pradesh, took home a gold and a bronze medal at the 11th Commonwealth Karate Championship, which took place in Durban, South Africa, on November 30 and December 1.
Singhi, who specialises in kata, won gold in the Commonwealth Cup and the bronze medal in the Elite Championship category.
She was competing in the Commonwealth karate event for the third time.
In 2018 and 2022, she had won gold and bronze at the 9th and 10th Commonwealth Karate Championships in South Africa and Birmingham, UK, respectively.
She recently took home the gold in the Russian Karate Federation's Moscow Universe Karate competition.
One of karate's most difficult styles, kata, demands that performers execute intricate movement patterns with strength and accuracy. Through years of intense training, Singhi has become an expert in this difficult art form.
Singhi is currently practicing in Hyderabad, and her most recent victory solidifies her status as one of the country's most accomplished karate competitors.
Additionally, Lance Naik Akumienla L. Imchen of the 15 IR Mahila battalion also won a bronze medal at the 11th Commonwealth Karate Championships, which took place in Durban, South Africa, from November 28 to December 1.
With this outstanding accomplishment, she becomes the first person from Nagaland to win a medal in an international karate tournament, honouring the state and the country.
As seen by her bronze medal victory in the 8th South Asian Karate Championship earlier this year, Imchen has continuously shown remarkable commitment and talent throughout her career.
