ITANAGAR: Techi Sonu, a para-athlete from Arunachal Pradesh, has been chosen by the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) to represent the country at the esteemed Sharjah 2025 International Para Athletics Championship.
The championship, organized by Althiqah Club for the Disabled, will take place from February 2 to February 4 in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Through his remarkable achievements in state, zonal, and national events, he has brought great pride to Arunachal Pradesh.
He won Gold Medals at the State Level Arm Wrestling Championship 2016 in Itanagar and the Mr. Arunachal Bodybuilding Championship 2019 in Roing. He clinched a Gold Medal at the 2020 North India Powerlifting Championship in Guwahati, Assam.
The para-athlete secured a Bronze Medal in the 40 kg weight category at the Mr. India National Divyang Bodybuilding Championship 2019 in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. He won a Silver Medal in shot put in the F-44 category at the National Para Athletics Championship 2021 in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
He earned a Bronze Medal at the Eastern India Strength Lifting Championship 2020 held in Geyzing, Sikkim. Techi Sonu secured a Silver Medal in the Senior Men’s 74 kg category at the 2021 National Para Powerlifting Championship in Bangalore, Karnataka.
His participation marks a historic milestone for Arunachal Pradesh, as he becomes the first para-athlete from the state to compete in an international para-athletics event. He pioneered para-sports in Arunachal Pradesh, paving the way for many state para-athletes at a time when para-sports were neither recognized nor practiced in the state. He played a pivotal role in fostering an environment where the state’s para-athletes could finally display their hidden talents in sports and other activities.
