ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu said the state government is working to transform the traditional handloom sector into a major driver of rural livelihoods, women empowerment and sustainable economic growth through modern design, entrepreneurship and better market access.
Speaking at the inaugural function of the three-day 12th National Handloom Day celebrations at the DK Convention Centre on Friday, Khandu said handloom reflected the cultural identity and heritage of the state's indigenous tribes. He noted that Arunachal has more than 32,000 handloom weavers, most of them women, and said the government has strengthened the sector through improved infrastructure, skill development, design innovation and marketing support.
He said common facility centres had been established, weaving infrastructure upgraded and modern equipment introduced, while weavers were receiving training in contemporary design, natural dyeing and product diversification. He also urged young entrepreneurs to combine traditional craftsmanship with branding, digital marketing and e-commerce.
