ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen (Retd) K T Parnaik on Thursday called for making Geographic Information System (GIS) technology the cornerstone of governance, saying a unified geospatial platform would improve decision-making, public service delivery and sustainable development.
Addressing the Geo Vision Itanagar seminar organised by Esri India, the Governor urged all government departments to adopt GIS-based systems and proposed a state geospatial governance platform integrating data from key departments to enable better coordination and evidence-based policymaking.
Parnaik identified land management, infrastructure development, border area monitoring and disaster preparedness as priority sectors for geospatial intervention. He also advocated GIS-based cadastral surveys, digitisation of land records, drone-based mapping and advanced hazard mapping to strengthen governance and climate resilience.
The Governor said emerging technologies such as GeoAI, Digital Twins and mobile GIS could make governance more proactive, efficient and citizen-centric. He added that GIS could support agriculture, healthcare, urban planning and social initiatives, including the Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat campaign, through data-driven planning and real-time monitoring.
The seminar was attended by senior government officials, police officers, technologists, planners, administrators and industry experts.
