Assam: Nearly 34000 People Affected by the Current Spell of Floods

As the country prepares for winter and a dry season, Assam is battling another round of flooding across several districts.

GUWAHATI: Three districts of the Northeast Indian state of Assam are currently affected by floods due to the rains in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Heavy rains in the state have caused the water levels of the Siang river to rise. This has led to rising in the water levels of the Brahmaputra river in Assam.

As per a report published by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, Government of Assam, 33836 people have been affected till now in this spell. The affected regions belong to eight revenue circles of three districts of the state, as per the report published at 4 PM of Tuesday.

The affected revenue circles are Dhemaji, Jonai and Sissiborgaon in the Dhemaji district, Chabua in the Dibrugarh district and North Lakhimpur, Bihpuria, Subansiri and Nowboicha in the Lakhimpur district. 14086, 11372 and 8378 people have been affected in Dhemaji, Chabua and Dibrugarh districts respectively, totalling 33836 people across all the eight revenue circles. An area of 1265 hectares of cultivated land in the Dhemaji district and 35 hectares in the Lakhimpur district have also been submerged in the flood.

No flood relief camps have been set up by the administration till now, but relief materials are being distributed at 5 centres of the Dhemaji revenue circle and 1 centre of the Sissiborgaon revenue circle of the Dhemaji district.

Three people had to be recused by NDRF using boats in the Dhemaji district. There have been no reports of any casualty to humans or animals to date as per the report. But a total of 10625 livestock have been affected by the flood. This number includes 7546 large animals, 2335 small animals and 744 poultry.

There have been some reports about damage to infrastructures, but no major issues have been reported. Soil erosion has been reported from the Bongaigaon, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Morigaon and Sonitpur districts of the state.

The Brahmaputra river is already flowing above the danger mark in the Neamatighat of Jorhat. And the IMD has predicted heavy rains in the states of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
