BOKAKHAT: Eleven days after a devastating storm struck the Dusutimumukh Panchayat area of Bokakhat subdivision in the early hours of August 12, normal life has yet to return to the affected areas.
The storm severely affected Morongiyal, Borsapari, Misimiati, Medakgaon, Purana Narmari and Rangagara Tea Estate, with Morongiyal village reportedly suffering the most extensive damage.
Several families who lost their homes in the storm are still living without proper shelter. Women and children, in particular, are reportedly facing shortages of food and shelter.
On the night of the storm, Rupa Patgiri, wife of former Dusutimumukh Gaon Panchayat president Pushpa Patgiri, was seriously injured when a concrete wall of her house collapsed on her. She sustained injuries to several parts of her body, including her nose, teeth and forehead.
She was initially admitted to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital and was later shifted to a private hospital in Guwahati for advanced treatment. She remains under treatment and has not yet fully recovered or returned home.
According to her family, Bokakhat MLA Atul Bora and the Dusutimumukh Regional Committee of the Asom Gana Parishad have provided some financial assistance towards her treatment.
Meanwhile, resentment has reportedly grown among local residents, who allege that the administration has failed to properly provide government compensation and relief to disaster-affected families even after 11 days.
The affected residents have urged the government to urgently provide compensation to help rebuild their homes and financial assistance for medical treatment.
