12-hour Bandh over Kokrajhar encounter evokes full response

KOKRAJHAR/TANGLA: The normal life came to a standstill during the 12-hour bandh in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) on Monday which was called in protest against the encounter of two youths in Kokrajhar by security forces suspected to be the members of the newly floated United Liberation of Bodoland (ULB).

The family members and villagers of the deceased had alleged that they were a part of fake encounter. The dawn to dusk bandh was not called by any organization but people spontaneously observed the bandh and it evoked full response in Tangla, Kalaigaon, Udalguri, Orang, Rowta, Mazbat and Khoirabari of Udalguri district.

All kinds of vehicular movement, shops and business establishments were seen to be affected due to the bandh hours in the district. However no untoward incidents were reported during the bandh hours till the filing of this report in the evening. "The encounter by security forces have been a routine incident in the State in recent times, which is setting a bad precedent in gross violation of human rights, the Kokrajhar incident calls for a judicial inquiry," said a senior advocate of Udalguri requesting anonymity.
