TANGLA: In a significant move, the Government of Assam has issued a draft delimitation notification for 81 newly-included villages in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), encompassing five districts—Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Tamulpur, and Udalguri. The notification was issued by Dr. B. Kalyan Chakravarthy, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary of the Labour Welfare and Co-operation Department, Government of Assam, on June 5.
The draft delimitation order follows the inclusion of these villages through three key government notifications issued by the Welfare of Bodoland Department on December 31, 2022; November 6, 2023; and September 21, 2024. The order aims to redefine the territorial boundaries of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) constituencies to accommodate the newly added villages.
As per Rule 3(2) of the BTC (Election) Rules, 2004, the government is required to publish such draft orders for public consultation. The current notification includes a detailed annexure (Annexure ‘A’) listing all 81 villages, their previous and present districts, and the proposed BTC constituencies.
The villages—currently spread across the districts of Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, and Nalbari—are now proposed to be incorporated under the administrative jurisdictions of Udalguri and Tamulpur districts within the BTR. A significant cluster of villages transferred from Biswanath district are proposed to be accommodated in the Dhnwsri (ST) and Rowta (ST) BTC constituencies.
The notification invites views, objections, and suggestions from individuals, organizations, and stakeholders, which must be submitted to the respective District Commissioners (DCs) on or before June 13, 2025. The DCs will then forward their recommendations and observations to the concerned authorities by June 16, 2025, the notification stated.
