On the morning of December 24, I received one of the saddest pieces of news: the passing of my close friend, well-wisher, and adviser, Dr. Rabindra Chandra Bhuyan. A humble and compassionate soul, he was not only a brilliant surgeon but also a kind-hearted individual who dedicated his life to helping others. Admired and respected for his charismatic approach to patient care, he never shied from dispersing free medical advice to strangers he met along the way. His sudden demise has left me deeply shocked and saddened. Born on the December 24, 1940, Dr. Bhuyan’s family hailed from Nowgong. He excelled academically throughout his schooling, MBBS at GMC, and postgraduate studies in surgery at AMC, Dibrugarh. After a brief tenure at AMC, he joined Williamson Magor Tea Company as Chief Medical Officer (CMO). During this stint, he pioneered the establishment of the first OT at Itakhooli Tea Estate for the company. He later served as CMO for the gardens of HUL in the Doomdooma area, continuing in this role until retirement.
Even post-retirement, Dr. Bhuyan remained devoted to medicine, serving as a visiting surgeon for Warren Tea and other companies. He also worked at the Apollo Diagnostic Centre in Tinsukia. His dedication to his profession and his compassion for patients made him an extraordinary figure in the medical community. Dr. Bhuyan’s talents extended beyond medicine. He was a distinguished judge at flower and vegetable shows, annual highlights of Tea Planters’ club events during the winter season. His multifaceted personality and genuine warmth touched countless lives.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Purnima Bhuyan, his son and daughter-in-law, his daughter and son-in-law, and his grandson. His sudden departure has cast a pall of gloom over all who knew him, and his loss is deeply felt.
May the Almighty grant his soul eternal peace in his heavenly abode. Om Shanti!
