Yogeswar Saikia, a noted advocate, an activist of Assam Foreigners' Movement and social worker of Guwahati, left for his heavenly abode on August 16 due to massive heart attack. Late Saikia was born on November 1, 1948 at Tatibahar near Narayanpur in the district of Lakhimpur and had his early education at Narayanpur, thereafter he was graduated from J.B. College, Jorhat in the year of 1977. Late Saikia obtained LL.B Degree from Gauhati University in the year 1985 and joined High Court Bar on November 1, 1985.
During his practice he also served as a Government Advocate of Assam for a brief period. Late Saikia was a prominent athlete during his college and university days and recipient of awards in inter-college competition. Yogeswar Saikia took active part in foreigner's issue of Assam for which he suffered a lot.
Late Saikia was a helpful and sympathetic neighbour and a frank philosopher and guide for young advocates. His house was open for young lawyers for any help which he never hesitated to provide. He was a man of principle with hilarious nature and used to live a simple and humble life though he settled at Guwahati but he never snapped his relations with his hometown Narayanpur and a regular visitor of Narayanpur. He worked for the development of Narayanpur and he had a dream that one day Narayanpur will be declared a Sub-Division. However, the dream remains unfulfilled. He was a true follower of Srimanta Sankardev and Madhabdev. During his legal profession he always fought for the cause of the downtrodden and extended free legal aid to the deserving litigants. He participated in many legal awareness camp organized by the different law colleges in rural areas. He had a good oratory and participated in many seminars on legal matter. He was an active, disciplined and beautiful person and an inspiration to young generations. His sudden death is a huge loss for lawyers' community which is not easy to fill up. He was connected with several social, cultural and religious organizations of Narayanpur and at Kalipur, Bhootnath area where he resides at Guwahati.
To quote George Bernard Shaw "A gentleman is one who puts more to the World than he takes out." His death was widely condoled by different organization including Gauhati High Court Bar Association. He was 74 and is survived by wife and two sons. On the day of his Adya Shraddha, I pay my homage for the peaceful rest of his soul.
