TANGLA: The All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) staged a statewide protest on Saturday after the state government intensified eviction drives across districts to clear what it calls encroached land. Protests against the move have gathered momentum, particularly from minority rights groups, terming it selective harassment and hounding of religious minorities in the state.

The All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) staged demonstrations in Mangaldai of Darrang district and Kalaigaon of Udalguri district on Saturday condemning the drives as ‘inhumane’ and ‘politically motivated.’ Calling the evictions a ‘conspiracy’ against minority communities, AAMSU submitted a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma through Darrang and Udalguri district commissioners, demanding an immediate halt to what it termed as ‘illegal evictions.’

“The inhumane manner in which the eviction process is being conducted, violating human rights and fundamental rights of living with dignity, is strongly condemnable. This selective harassment of religious minorities will never be accepted,” said Adviser of AAMSU, Ainuddin Ahmed, taking part in the protest at Mangaldai in Darrang district. He also questioned whether the alleged encroachers belonged only to the minority community.

“We demand transparency. Are there no other encroachers? Or is this action targeted only on religious minorities?” he questioned. He further asserted that if the state government did not stop the eviction, thousands of people would come out to the streets in the coming days. He further alleged that the government is selectively targeting minorities ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, calling the move politically motivated.

Leading the protest in Udalguri’s Kalaigaon, Udalguri President Khurshed Alam alleged that the state government had been targeting genuine citizens of religious minorities. He said that from tagging genuine citizens as ‘foreigners’ to pushbacks in No Man’s Land to arbitrary and ‘inhumane eviction,’ all of them were executed for political benefit. “The eviction drives are being carried out without following the guidelines of the high court and Supreme Court. This is a violation of human rights,” he added.

He further highlighted the humanitarian crisis caused by the evictions, “The bulldozers have left women, children, and the elderly without shelter. Children are missing out on education. Women have no access to toilets or healthcare. Homes, mosques, and madrassas have been brought to rubble.”

The students’ body warned of larger statewide protests if the government fails to act on their demands. “Lakhs from the minority community will take to the streets if our voices are ignored,” he added.
