TANGLA: Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary attended the 20th Adivasi Mahasabha, organized by the AASAA central committee at Borengajuli TE of Udalguri on Saturday.

He stated that the Adivasi community, through their food habits, distinct culture, and rich history, whose mentions are found in epic tales of Hindu mythology, proves their ethnicity and tribal nature. He underlined the state government’s commitment and asserted that the government has been working to ensure equal development, equal dignity, and equal opportunity for all sections of the people of the state.

Referring to the demand of ST status of Adivasis, he asserted that the constitution (Scheduled Tribes) order (Amendment) bill 2019 aims to recognise six communities, including the Koch-Rajbongshi Tai Ahom, Moran, Matak, and those 36 sub-tribes of Adivasi communities which are recognised by the government. He also stated that the state government is working towards fulfilling the same ensuring full safeguard to protect the interests, rights, and privileges of the existing Scheduled Tribes of Assam. Speaking on the occasion, former Rajya Sabha MP Santiuse Kujur exhorted the community to stay united to fight their cause and place their demands before the government.

AASAA President Pradeep Nag lambasting the government at both the centre and state alleged that it has been playing a hide-and-seek game with the Adivasi people of the state on the ST issue. He exhorted the 36 sub-communities of Adivasi to come together under an umbrella and common platform to fight for their tribal status and land rights. “If our demands are not met before 2026, we are ready with a roadmap for fighting for our political rights through political means,” he added.
