Boko: Advantage Assam 2.0 has brought hope to the Muga, Eri, and other silk weavers and especially to the weavers of Assam as the Assam State Handloom, Textiles, and Sericulture Department signed three MoUs with three different companies on Tuesday. The MoUs signed between Rudra Enterprise from Mumbai to set up geotextiles, an Eri-based industry, and a carpet industry in BTR; De’ Pedro Sugar Industries from Karnataka state for the setting up of a silk technical textile-based industry in Assam; and Windsor Fashions Pvt. Ltd. from Guwahati for the setting up of a production unit for a mosquito net and agro-textile industry in Assam. The MoU signing ceremony was held in the presence of the Assam State Handloom, Textile & Sericulture Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma and P. Sivakumar, Member Secretary & CEO of the Central Silk Board. It is worth mentioning that the investment will create more than 1300 direct jobs in the state.
On the other hand, the Central Silk Board (CSB) MESSO Guwahati exhibition stall at the prestigious Advantage Assam 2.0 exhibition in Guwahati recently garnered significant attention from a distinguished group of delegates, industry leaders, and government officials. The stall highlighted the vast potential of muga and eri sericulture, emphasizing the sector’s contribution to fashion, tradition, healthcare, and sustainability, with the theme “Soil to Silk… Fashion, Tradition, Healthcare & Beyond.” The stall highlighted the sector’s role not only as a traditional craft but also as a key player in the future of industries ranging from food & beverage, biomedical applications, biomaterials, and bioengineering technologies to sustainable fashion and even aerospace.
Among the first to visit the stall were the Minister of Sericulture, Handloom & Handicrafts, Govt. of Assam UG Brahma, Dhananjay Basumatary, Chief Handloom Development, BTC, and Daobaisa Boro, Executive Member, BTC. The esteemed group was joined by Assam Gaurav Awardee Dharanidhar Boro, who applauded the innovative approach of CSB in presenting the diverse uses of Assam’s sericulture products.
A key moment at the exhibition was the visit of the Member Secretary of the Central Silk Board, who graced the event as a state guest. The CSB MESSO Guwahati stall offered an in-depth view of the potential of sericulture in Assam, showcasing not only traditional silk weaving but also the growing interest in biomedical, biomaterials, and by-products value addition in the sericulture sector as these emerging fields highlight the rich, sustainable, and eco-friendly legacy of Assam’s sericulture industry.
The stall also attracted prominent visitors, including CMD of Jute Corporation of India, Assam Gaurav Awardee Dr. Jogesh Deuri, Retd. Director of DoS BTC, representatives from Lion’s Rotary Club, All India Radio, and Bajaj Industries & Casablanca Ltd. Discussions revolved around the non-textile applications of silk fibre, including its role in biomedical engineering and silkworm pupae as an alternative superfood with multiple pharmaceutical potential.
Other notable visitors included Lok Sabha MP Assam Kamakhya Prasad Tasa from the Kaziranga constituency, Mukut Rabha, 9th APBN, Nagaon Commander, and Debashish Sharma, Commandant, Assam Police. The stall was also visited by the Minister of Agriculture, Govt. of Assam Atul Bora, who expressed appreciation for CSB’s initiative in portraying the potential of the sericulture sector in Assam.
In addition, Dr. K. Neog, Director of CSB CMERTI, Lahdoigarh, and Thomas Basumatary, Additional Commissioner of CGST, Guwahati, visited the stall, providing valuable feedback on the ongoing efforts to enhance the sericulture industry and its prospects.
Advantage Assam 2.0 proved to be the ideal platform for CSB MESSO Guwahati to position Assam’s sericulture sector as a crucial player in both traditional and future industries. From its longstanding legacy in sustainable fashion to emerging applications in biomedical and food technologies, sericulture’s role in Assam’s economy is set to expand into new frontiers, including cutting-edge biomedical & aerospace innovations.
