DIBRUGARH: Members of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) staged a sit-in protest at Chowkidingee in Dibrugarh on Wednesday, demanding the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in Assam. The protesters expressed concern over the influx of migrants from other states, saying that it threatens the interests of the indigenous population.

“The introduction of the ILP is the only foolproof way to protect and safeguard the interests of the indigenous people of Assam. The ILP is already in force in neighbouring northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Manipur. It must be introduced in Assam to address ongoing demographic shifts resulting from rampant infiltration,” an AJYCP leader said.

Since 1978, the AJYCP has been advocating vigorously for the ILP. This system requires all outsiders, including Indian citizens from other states, to obtain special permits to enter and stay in ILP-regulated areas.

Additionally, the AJYCP condemned the Assam government’s recent directive to withdraw cases against illegal Hindu Bangladeshis in Foreigners Tribunals. They called for strict adherence to the Assam Accord, which sets March 24, 1971, as the cut-off date for deporting illegal immigrants.

“There should be no religious criteria influencing decisions on illegality. Any individuals from Bangladesh, regardless of being Hindu or Muslim, who entered Assam after that date should be sent back. Assam is not a refuge for illegal immigrants from Bangladesh,” the AJYCP leader added.
