BONGAIGAON: The All Assam Students Union (AASU) centrally observed the ‘Students Solidarity Day’ on Tuesday at the Tulungiya area of Bongaigaon.

The programme, held in the Tulungiya LP School field, was organized by Bongaigaon district AASU in association with North Salamara and Abhayapuri AASU. The day started with AASU’s flag hoisting by Utpal Sarma, Central President of AASU. Tributes were paid by Samiran Phukan, Secretary of AASU, which were followed by floral tributes to Martyr Gajen Ingti and Martyr Putul Saikia by Samujjal Bhattacharya, Chief Advisor of AASU.

Addressing the gathering, Utpal Sarma said, “All student unions of Assam such as All Bodo Students Union, All Koch-Rajbanshi Students Union, Nath Yogi Students Union, and Sutradhar Students Union have participated in the ‘Students Solidarity Day’ which is observed every year on June 10. This area in Bongaigaon is a Koch-Rajbanshi majority area. The Koch-Rajbanshi community has a colourful historical background with kings like Naranarayan and warriors like Chilaray. We demand that a big museum should be constructed here in Bongaigaon in the memory of King Naranarayan and Chilaray.”

Talking about the illegal Bangladeshi migrants issue, Samujjal Bhattacharya stated that illegal migrants should definitely be deported out of the country. “Our present Assam Government has taken a good initiative to deport illegal migrants. But we demand that this should not be stopped midway. This should be continued in a full-fledged manner,” Bhattacharya said.

Bhattacharya also demanded for upgradation of NRC. “As we come to know, many illegal immigrants have got their names included in NRC, and so this has to be upgraded. Moreover, there is a vital issue regarding sealing of the Indo-Bangladesh border which still remains incomplete. We demand it be completed. Government has to be stern to stop the illegal migrants and should issue shoot-at-sight orders for them,” Bhattacharya said.
