GUWAHATI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to convene a meeting with chief ministers from the Northeastern states on Sunday to assess the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which has replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in the region. This meeting comes as part of Shah's ongoing visit to the Northeast, which began on Friday night.

On Saturday, Shah attended an event organized by the Assam Rifles in Mizoram, where he spent the night. His Sunday itinerary includes a visit to Kokrajhar, where he is scheduled to address the 57th annual conference of the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU). The ABSU was a signatory to the historic Bodo Peace Accord, which was established five years ago.

Following his address in Kokrajhar, Shah will travel to Guwahati in the afternoon to chair the meeting with the chief ministers of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Nagaland, and Sikkim. The representation from Manipur remains uncertain due to the state being under President's rule following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh last month.

During the meeting, each state will present updates on the progress made in implementing the BNS. Shah's visit to the region is expected to conclude with his return to New Delhi on Sunday night. Prior to his engagements in Mizoram, he inaugurated the upgraded Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Golaghat, Assam, on Saturday.
