KOKRAJHAR: APCC president and MP Gaurav Gogoi who is in Kokrajhar for two days, aimed to revamp the strong legacy of the Congress in Lower Assam as he met several Congress workers, attended a number of public meetings, and discussed issues with elder citizens and senior mediapersons. Hundreds of old and new Congress workers were seen running after him to welcome and talk to him.
Gogoi’s visit in Kokrajhar might become a worrying factor for the ruling BJP as Congress stalwarts in lower Assam are likely to flock together to revamp the party bases led by Gaurav Gogoi as he is a prominent face of the party. Most of the former Congress workers expressed that the political scenario in BTC could change if Gogoi paid constant visits to BTC and Lower Assam.
Gogoi held a brief discussion with some senior journalists of Kokrajhar and took note of the changing political scenario in BTC and key issues of the indigenous people of the region including the functioning of BTC administration and implementation of the clauses of BTR Accord. He said that the Congress would be back on the strong track, not in a hurry but steadily. He also said that he never thought it necessary to reply to every BJP leader’s remark against the Congress as good times of the Congress were on their way.
Talking to reporters at Adabari, Gogoi said that Congress respected regional sentiment and therefore, all regional parties came into existence during its time while BJP believed in one nation-one party and there would soon be no AGP, no UPPL, and no BPF in the region. He said that the Congress did not interfere in BTC elections and Bodos were given free hand to run the council but now the remote control of BTC was in the hands of Himanta Biswa Sarma who would never let the Bodos run the BTC on their own. He also said that by forging an alliance with the BJP, the AGP which came out of the Assam Agitation, became a small platform of three-four leaders. The AGP had the responsibility of implementing the clauses of Assam Accord staying with BJP.
Gogoi attended a public meeting at Thulsibil on Sunday evening where several hundreds of people gathered. He held a meeting with Congress workers at Ranendra Basumatary Bhavan in Kokrajhar. On Monday, Gogoi attended a grand public meeting at Adabari under Baokhungri constituency near Kokrajhar town. Earlier, he attended the executive meeting of the district Congress committee. His visit to Kokrajhar brought back old Congress workers to its fold. On Monday morning, Gogoi went to Thulungapuri in Dotma and offered a floral tribute to Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma before attending the executive meeting of the party and public meeting at Adabari.
