Silchar:  In a letter addressed to the Governor of Assam, a section of the leading citizens of Sribhumi expressed their extreme grievance against the recent change of nomenclature of both the Karimganj town as well as the district. The letter, signed by 2.17 lakh people of the bordering district, vehemently protested the decision. They termed it as ‘unilateral’, of  changing the name of the town and the district as a whole. Noted advocate as well as the Congress candidate in the last Lok Sabha election in Karimganj led the demonstration before officially handing over the letter to the Deputy Commissioner. Chowdhury said, the Chief Minister intended to fan the communal division in the guise of nomenclature change. Jyotish Purkayastha, a leading citizen of Sribhumi too criticised the move to change the name of the district as well as the town. The signatories demanded immediate quash of the change of nomenclature to maintain the historic significance of the bordering district.
