Assam Agitation leader Tilak Chandra Mazumdar passes away at 85

Tilak Chandra Mazumdar, a veteran leader of the Assam Movement and a noted scholar of Sankari literature, passed away at the age of 85, at a private hospital in Guwahati

NAGAON: Tilak Chandra Mazumdar, a veteran leader of the Assam Movement and a noted scholar of Sankari literature, passed away at the age of 85, at a private hospital in Guwahati on Tuesday night. He leaves behind his wife, writer Upama Mazumdar, a son, four daughters, and other relatives and friends.

Born on August 12, 1940, in the Majumdar family of Ramdia Sri Sri Dhakurapara Satra in Kamrup district, Mazumdar was a prominent figure in the academic and cultural landscape of the state. He completed his primary and ME education at the local school in Ramdia and later attended Hajo High School for his secondary education. Mazumdar graduated with honours in Assamese from Cotton College, Guwahati, in 1962 and earned his postgraduate degree from Gauhati University in 1965. He began his teaching career at North Guwahati College in 1965 and later joined Nowgong Girls’ College, where he taught for 35 years before retiring in 2001. He also served as the founder principal of Sri Shankardev Junior College in Nagaon. A devoted scholar of Sankari literature, Mazumdar authored several research books, including ‘Satra Darpan,’ ‘Abibhakta Nagaon Jilar Satra Samuhar Samaj-Sanskritik Adhyayan,’ and ‘Satraar Gurikatha.’ He also edited several volumes, such as ‘Prachin Asomiya Sahityar Pranjal Dhara’ and ‘Srimanta Shankardev: Sahitya Sanskritir Jilikani,’ etc.

Mazumdar’s demise sent shockwaves across Nagaon district, with many paying tribute to his contributions to Assam’s cultural and literary heritage. The AGP, Axam Xahitya Xabha, and other organizations condoled his death, describing him as a stalwart of Assam’s cultural and intellectual landscape.

Mazumdar’s mortal remains were taken to the AGP office in Nagaon today, where party leaders and workers paid their last respects. Later, his body was taken to Nowgong Girls’ College, where colleagues and students paid tribute to the veteran scholar. The final rites were performed at Amolapatty Public Crematorium in the presence of a large gathering.
