NUMALIGARH: Serious allegations of caste certificate forgery have surfaced against Jumoni Baruah Phukan, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the No. 5 Marangi Zila Parishad constituency under the Khumtai Legislative Assembly segment. The matter came to light following written complaints submitted yesterday to the Golaghat District Election Officer by two rival candidates, Mousumi Rabha of the Indian National Congress and independent candidate Purabi Sharma.

The complaints were filed during the ongoing scrutiny of nomination papers. As per the information received, Jumoni Baruah Phukan, despite being from a general caste background—both her father and husband reportedly belong to the ‘Kalita’ community—has submitted a caste certificate claiming to belong to the ‘Ahom’ community, which falls under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.

The method by which she allegedly procured this certificate remains unclear, raising serious concerns and suspicions. Following the formal complaints, an investigation into the matter has already been initiated, and further developments are expected by tomorrow.

Within the BJP itself, the situation has created considerable unrest. Party insiders and grassroots-level workers have expressed dissatisfaction over the denial of the party ticket to Purabi Sharma, who previously served as the elected Marangi Zila Parishad member and reportedly completed her term without any allegations of misconduct. Her rejection has reportedly led her to resign from the BJP and contest as an independent candidate, a decision that was kept under wraps until this report uncovered the full details.

The complainants have demanded the immediate cancellation of Jumoni Baruah Phukan’s nomination and appropriate legal action for allegedly misleading the Election Commission with forged documents. All eyes are now on the concerned authorities to see what action will be taken in light of these serious allegations.
