GUWAHATI: As the cost of essential commodities continues to surge, Assam witnesses a substantial increase in the price of egg trays, with each now selling at Rs. 200, up from the previous Rs. 180, as per reports on Tuesday.
The surge in egg tray prices is because of the recent escalation in the cost of eggs, resulting in a direct impact on sales as each egg now comes at an extra Rs 1.
Local shopkeepers in Guwahati shared their concerns, stating, "The escalating price of eggs has dissuaded consumers from making purchases, leading to a decline in sales."
Meanwhile, the city's roadside vendors and hotels known for their delectable omelettes also voiced their challenges. One vendor complained, "I've had to halt my egg purchases following the price hike. Previously, I sold omelettes for Rs. 16, but now, due to the increased cost, I'll need to sell them for Rs. 20."
Notably, it must be observed that this price surge follows a series of hikes in essential food items in Assam earlier this August. The important increases among these included Tur Dal (Yellow Pigeon Peas) rising by Rs. 40 per kilogram, Matir Dal increasing by Rs. 10 per kilogram, rice seeing a Rs. 10 per kilogram increase, and sugar climbing by Rs. 2 per kilogram.
Making for yet another shocking story in the city, a fiery dispute occurred at a hotel when a customer discovered a dead lizard in the rice thali he had ordered. This incident took place on Monday night at the Maa Kali Hotel in Paltan Bazar.
As per reports, the customer in question hailed from Silchar and had visited the hotel for dinner. While several other people were taking their meals at the same time here, the shocking discovery of the dead animal in this customer's food led to a heated altercation with the staff members.
Later on, the angry customer lodged a formal complaint at the Paltan Bazar Police Station, accusing the hotel of breaching hygiene standards and jeopardizing public health. The incident has drawn attention to the importance of maintaining food safety and sanitation in eateries.
