TEZPUR: A group of robbers carried out a daylight burglary at an astrologer's house in Tezpur, Assam, sparking concerns among local residents about the rising incidents of theft in the city.
Thieves have increasingly been targeting houses during the day, carefully observing residents' routines, identifying vulnerabilities, and executing their plans with precision.
In a bold move, the gang forced their way through a fortified door at Sharma's residence, stealing Rs. 15,000 in cash and gold ornaments worth Rs. 3 lakh before fleeing the scene.
Residents claim that for over a year, the gang has taken advantage of alleged weak policing in Tezpur, carrying out numerous daylight robberies with impunity. Victims are left facing substantial financial losses, while authorities have reportedly not taken any stern action.
Citizens have voiced their frustration with the local police force, accusing them of negligence. “They seem more focused on leisure activities than addressing our security concerns,” said a resident.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, criminals broke into a car in broad daylight on December 14, in Assam's South Kamrup's Uparhali and stole Rs. 10,000 in cash.
The criminals targeted the vehicle and smashed the glass of Utpalananda Acharya's XUV500 SUV, bearing registration number AS 01 BE 0202, according to reports.
Acharya, hailing from Xoru Tezpur, was attacked as he and his spouse were heading to the weekly market after dropping their child off at school. According to reports, cash and 20 grams of gold jewellery that had been bought for a wedding were taken by the criminals.
