DIGBOI: Police in Digboi recovered a body from Sector 4 near an oil rig under Digboi Police Station in Tinsukia district on Wednesday afternoon. The deceased Nongbow Choupu belonged to Ketetong Village under Margherita Sub Division in Tinsukia district.

The corpse with multiple scars on the body and face was recovered lying at the base of the mammoth iron structure used for drilling and extracting oil and gas. The police and security sources, at the Digboi Muliabari-based Oil India Office, suspect that the victim might have accidentally fallen from higher altitude while committing some act forbidden in the restricted oil belt.

“The circumstantial evidence is indicating that a gang was involved in the act of pilfering oil assets penetrating the attached Pengaree Reserve Forest,” said a police source.

Meanwhile, the Investigation Officer informed that having completed the due formalities, the guardian of the deceased was called and requested to receive the corpse on Thursday, which was not done till filling of reports due to financial constraints of the family members.

Such accidents could have been averted had the security agency of the Oil India intensified their round the clock patrolling within their jurisdiction.

The pilfering activities from the nearby areas of Pengaree are nothing new to the oilfields managed by Oil India with thousands of rigs, plants, and huge networks of dead and active pipelines both over and under the ground.

Recovery of stolen properties of Oil India, including materials like pipes, etc. from trucks couple of months back by Digboi Police, and petty thefts therein are indicative of the proactive gang of thieves operating despite adequately armed security forces in the demarcated oil areas.
