A CORRESPONDENT
SILCHAR: After receiving a hoax call from self-claimed Lashkar-e-Taiba militants a month ago, the employees of Jhandu Infratech Company, a highway construction firm, faced an explosion at their Tarinipur Camp Office in Katigorah on Wednesday evening. Cachar SP Nomal Mahatta, while speaking to this correspondent, said that they had already picked up two persons today for interrogation on the basis of CCTV footage. He, however, ruled out any militant link in the incident.
Last month, the manager of Jhandu Infratech received a phone call from an unknown person claiming to be a cadre of the Pakistan-based militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba who demanded a huge ransom. The manager called the police and subsequently four local small-time miscreants were nabbed. Two were arrested from Katigorah and on the basis of their confessions, the Silchar Police arrested the kingpin and his accomplice from Meghalaya.
Mahatta said that they had till now received no clue to link yesterday’s incident of explosion with that of the ransom call. However, one of the members of the gang that demanded ransom pretending to be Lashkar cadre was still absconding and reportedly hiding in Nagaland.
Mahatta said that on Wednesday they received information from a worker of Jhandu Infratech Camp Office at Taranipur, Katigorah that a cracker-like blast was heard near the main gate of their office at around 4:30 PM. A police team immediately rushed to the place of occurrence. During investigation, some scratches were found on a small tree. Some blasting material like gelatine sticks which were used in stone mines in Meghalaya, one battery-like object, and some plastic pieces were also found on the spot. Mahatta said that from the preliminary investigation, it seemed like an incident to create fear by some miscreants.
