Assam: Centenarian freedom fighter Maniki Gogoi passes away

Maniki Gogoi, wife of freedom fighter Late Mukheshwar Gogoi of Sivasagar district, passed away at Jhanji Dhekial Chaudang village.

GAURISAGAR: Maniki Gogoi, wife of freedom fighter Late Mukheshwar Gogoi of Jhanji Dhekial Chaudang village under Morabazar Mouza of Amguri Revenue Circle in Sivasagar district, passed away on Thursday night. She was 103. Born on January 1, 1923 in Jhanji Jarabari Dibrual village, Maniki took an active part in the Indian Freedom Movement along with her freedom fighter brother Kanthiram Gogoi. They sheltered the volunteers of the Indian Freedom Movement at that time.

Maniki Gogoi cleverly hid many leaders and activists of the freedom movement and saved them from police torture. She also took the responsibility of her two sons and five daughters. She was very neat and clean and hospitable from the beginning and was awarded the Copper Medal (Trama Patra) by the Government of Assam.

The funeral of the centenarian freedom fighter was held on Friday at Balmia Chaudang village in Jhanji. Sivasagar District Collector Ayush Garg, SP Subhrajyoti Borah, DSP Prakash Medhi, Additional District Collector (ADC) Minakshi Parmi, Arup Bikramia, Circle Officer, Amguri Revenue Circle Officer, Denis Dutta, BDO Gaurisagar, and others laid wreaths on the body of the freedom fighter and also paid their last respects to the soldiers of the 1st Assam Police Battalion deployed at Ligiri Pukhuri in Nazira. The death of the prominent freedom fighter was mourned by various institutions and individuals.
