Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and State BJP President Dilip Saikia deeply thanked the Assamese people for their huge support to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and allies in the recently held Panchayat elections.

Speaking to the media at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati on Tuesday, the two leaders welcomed the result as a firm stamp of approval of the party's development agenda and a reiteration of its commitment towards further enhancing the Panchayati Raj system throughout the state.

The Chief Minister pointed out that, as a result of the unprecedented support of the people, the BJP won 272 out of the 397 Zila Parishad seats alone. Friendly alliance parties, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Rabha Joutha Mancha, bagged 28 and 4 seats, respectively, pushing the vote share of the BJP-led coalition to a staggering 76.22%.

This represents a significant jump from the 66% of votes gained during the 2019 polls. In contrast, the Congress party experienced a dramatic dip in its performance, securing merely 72 seats—18% of the total—down from the 35% it previously enjoyed.

CM Sarma also highlighted the performance in the Anchalik Panchayat member constituencies, where the BJP and allies won 1,436 of 2,192 seats, or 66% of the total. The Congress fell far behind, with merely 22% of the seats. The Chief Minister noted that this drastic decline in the Congress's base proves an increasing disconnect between the opposition and the dreams of the rural people.

Expressing gratitude to the voters, Dr. Sarma and Saikia stated that the faith reposed in them is not only an electoral triumph but a mandate to keep providing good governance. They attributed this to the BJP's steady attention to welfare schemes, rural development, and clean governance. The Chief Minister said that the outcome is an indication of people's faith in the developmental process of the state and their appreciation of the leadership of both Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centre and the state government under his leadership.

A statement made by the BJP's State Head Office emphasized that the people's trust and blessings will be an ongoing source of inspiration for the party. It promised that the government would stand firm in its commitment to serving the people and enacting more people-oriented programmes through the Panchayati Raj bodies. The party vowed to stay committed to inclusive growth and deepening grassroots democracy, with an emphasis on reaching the last person in the last village.

CM Sarma and Saikia also conveyed their sincerest gratitude to BJP leaders and karyakartas at all levels—state to booth—for their indefatigable work during the election campaign. Special thanks were expressed to Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Pabitra Margherita, and Members of Parliament, State Ministers, and MLAs, for their energetic participation and motivational leadership throughout the election process.
