GUWAHATI: In a recent high-profile meeting with ambassadors and high commissioners of 36 countries, including representatives from ASEAN, BIMSTEC, and Europe, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid out the state's vision for a truly spectacular development plan and its potential as a future regional economic hub.
Sarma highlighted a landmark Rs 1 lakh crore infrastructure initiative, which includes plans for three new bridges across the Brahmaputra River, the creation of a satellite city near Guwahati in partnership with Singapore, and a new railway connection between Guwahati and Gelephu, Bhutan. Such projects are designed to improve regional connectivity and lift Assam up the value chain of cross-border trade.
Besides infrastructure, the Chief Minister announced a Rs 25,000 crore fund to push industrial growth, which has grown at an impressive 12.5% so far. It is also concentrating on green energy adoption in industries such as the Tata semiconductor plant, which would be powered entirely by renewable energy.
Looking forward, the plans are for sectors such as tourism, food and beverage, logistics, and fragrances. Since Assam is a gateway to Southeast Asia, it is poised to take off as a strategic location. Furthering this vision, the Advantage Assam Summit 2.0 will be a key event in February this year to attract international investors.
The state focuses on workforce development, with a better educational structure that supports this growth strategy aiming to build resilience and sustainability for the economy.
