MORIGAON: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will inaugurate the much-awaited Jagi Bhakatgaon Bridge in Morigaon on February 1. The new bridge is expected to significantly improve road connectivity in the region, benefiting local residents and driving economic growth.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, the construction of the four-lane Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge was on track, with only a few small delays on the Meghalaya side, said Cabinet Minister Abu Taher Mondal on Wednesday.
Mondal said that about 35 bridge pillars had been completed on the Assam side, where the work had progressed smoothly. “Officials had assured timely completion on the Meghalaya side unless there were any unforeseen incidents,” he added. Despite the delay on the Meghalaya side, the bridge was targeted for completion by 2028.
The bridge, spanning the Brahmaputra River between Assam and Meghalaya, was presented as a transformative project for terrestrial communication in India’s Northeast region. The length of the bridge was 19.3 km, which would have made it the longest river bridge in the country. It would have been supported by 199 pillars.
The bridge would shorten travel, especially between Phulbari in Meghalaya and Dhubri in Assam, cutting the distance by over 200 km. It would also help move goods more easily and support local businesses.
“Overall, the Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge was not just an infrastructural development but also a cornerstone for regional economic advancement, expected to catalyze growth and bring significant improvements in both transportation and trade in the Northeastern region,” Mondal said.
