MANGALDAI: Kharupetia Police arrested contractor Sahidul Islam for alleged fraud in a land purchase deal involving the property of former Assam Chief Minister Late Saida Anowara Taimur, at Kharupetia. The arrest follows a complaint (Case No. 31/2025) filed on March 23 by Sabir Ahmed, Taimur’s son-in-law, at Kharupetia Police Station. According to the complaint, Sahidul paid Ahmed an amount of Rs 3 lakh as an advance on January 17 last for a land on Hospital Road at Kharupetia and an agreement was drafted. However, Sahidul allegedly altered the agreement fraudulently, inflating the amount to Rs 1.13 crore. Ahmed provided relevant documents to the police, prompting an investigation. The police sent the documents for forensic analysis and conducted raids to apprehend Sahidul. On Saturday, acting on a tip-off, police detained Sahidul near the court premises in Mangaldai, bringing him to Kharupetia Police Station for interrogation. Police sources confirmed recovery of evidence of forgery, including signed blank papers. The police sought three days of judicial custody, but the court granted two days of police custody.

Additionally, daughter of Syeda Anwara, Taimur Zia Ahmed, filed a separate complaint (Case No. 23/2025) on March 4, accusing Sahidul of forging her signature to obtain a no-objection certificate for the land purchase. Although a case was registered and efforts were made to arrest him, Sahidul remained at large until Saturday. Sahidul claimed he received anticipatory bail for Case No. 23/2025 but was unaware of Case No. 31/2025. The arrested accused Sahidul has previously been implicated in several scams, including the Sanitary Toilet Scam and the Jal Jeevan Mission Scam.
