DIBRUGARH: As the monsoon season rapidly approaches, the Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs Department of Dibrugarh is taking proactive measures to safeguard food security in the flood-prone district.
A crucial meeting, chaired by Additional District Commissioner Biraj Boruah, took place on Tuesday, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss strategies to mitigate potential food shortages during emergencies.
The meeting featured attendees including the Director of the Dibrugarh branch of the Indian Food Corporation, local transporters, secretaries of cooperative societies, and representatives from the fair price shop owners’ association. Together, they reviewed the district’s historical flooding patterns and the impact these conditions have had on food distribution in previous years.
The meeting highlighted the need for all participants to work closely in reinforcing supply chains and logistics in anticipation of heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
A significant focus was placed on the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, a government scheme aimed at providing subsidised food grains to the economically vulnerable sections of society.
During the discussions, it was decided that fair price shop owners would begin early collection of rice from designated locations before the heavy rains set in. All fair price shop owners and cooperative society secretaries were instructed to collect their rice allocations for the month of June, July and August well in advance from designated storage facilities.
“We have directed all fair price shop owners to start gathering rice for the months of June, July, and August in advance. This will ensure that we have sufficient stock ready for distribution when it is needed the most,” a district official said.
